Routers Are Primary Focus Of IoT Attacks: Report

Routers stand out as the primary focus of IoT attacks, representing 75% of all infections. They serve as a gateway for hackers to infiltrate other networked devices. Following closely are security and IP cameras, comprising 15% of attacks, according to a new report by Asimily, an Internet of Things (IoT) risk management platform.

Titled IoT Device Security in 2024: The High Cost of Doing Nothing, the report said digital signage, media players, digital video recorders, printers, and smart lighting also face frequent targeting. The report underscores heightened concerns surrounding specialized industry equipment, such as vital healthcare devices like blood glucose monitors and pacemakers, real-time monitoring systems in manufacturing, and water quality sensors utilized in municipal operations.

The report highlights the evolving tactics of cybercriminals targeting vulnerable IoT devices, emphasizing the need for robust security measures.

Cyber insurers are increasingly demanding strong IoT security protocols, and businesses without adequate measures may face coverage denials or caps.

The manufacturing industry is now a prime target for cybercriminals, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive risk management strategies tailored to the unique challenges of IoT devices.
