Broadcom announces support for Apple HomeKit

Irvine, California, May 14, 2015: Semiconductor solutions company Broadcom Corporation has said its Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) software development kit (SDK) will now offers full Apple HomeKit support, further expanding its Internet of Things (IoT) portfolio offerings.

The WICED platform enabled developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to take “advantage of the growing HomeKit ecosystem with a complete solution.” By doing this, Broadcom was reducing time-to-market and improving the consumer experience by delivering home automation devices that enabled a seamless connection to their home network and can be controlled from a HomeKit-supported app on their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Broadcom’s WICED platform could also connect endpoints through a process known as bridging that delivered the benefits of HomeKit through a hardware module. This allowed, for example, a product like a Bluetooth Smart light bulb to connect to a smart plug containing Broadcom’s WICED module, creating a bridge from the light bulb to the user’s HomeKit-supported app on their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Key Features:

  • Support for 802.11ab/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Smart
  • Compact design to support multiple microcontrollers (MCUs) and systems-on-a-chip (SOCs)
  • Low memory footprint
  • Integrated development tools
  • Reliable interoperability and integrated security
  • Upgradeable over wireless connections
