Samsung launches the ARTIK line for IoT

This Website had reported a few days ago that South Korean company Samsung would be jumping into the thick of things so far as the Internet of Things (IoT) by unveiling platforms for IoT innovation.

That finally happened on Tuesday with Samsung launching a line of small electronic components that combine low-power computer chips, transmitters and software. These can now be used by developers to build the components into items as varied as televisions, parking meters and orthopedic shoes.

ARTIKCalled ARTIK, one of these boards, about the size of a small bug, has a Samsung chip with two processors, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and other features. The board is meant for applications like smartwatches, and is poised to sell for less than US$10.

Unveiling the line, Young Sohn, Samsung’s President and Chief Strategy Officer, said the largest board was the size of a postage stamps and includes all the features of a Samsung smartphone, including an eight-processor chip, 32 gigabytes of data storage and video capabilities. It will sell for less than $100, Young said.

Samsung has also announced the ARTIK’s Alpha Developer Program for a limited group of developers who want to get a headstart with ARTIK and help make the product even better. The finalists will have access to hardware and technical support, and connect directly with the product team for assistance and feedback.
