Nintendo to come out with sleep monitoring sensor

nintendologoLate last week, Japanese gaming giant Nintendo gave a glimpse into what’s on the cards next – it plans to enter the healthcare business with a device that can sense how well users sleep.

Called the Quality of Life (QOL) Sensor, this will sit by a consumer’s bedside and monitor his/her body movements, heart rate and breathing via radio waves. The sensor will then send the data it so gathers to Cloud-based servers for analysis, following which users can access the data to check on their sleep and fatigue levels.

Not only that, the QOL will also automatically make suggestions for the user such as get more exercise or change one’s diet. The information will be made available on “smart devices.

Details of this new sensor were revealed by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata at an official meeting. The company is partnering with ResMed, a U.S.-based manufacturer of machines to help treat sleep apnea, to help represent sleep and fatigue data in a meaningful way for users. The QOL Sensor will be available not before 2016.

The QOL initiative was first mentioned by the company in January this year.
