New oscillators for IoT by SiTime Corp are smaller, lighter and more energy efficient than quartz

Wholly owned subsidiary of MegaChips Corporation,  SiTime Corporation, has announced a new family of µPower MEMS Oscillators for the wearable, Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile markets.

The SiT8021 oscillator, the first device in this family, has set fresh benchmarks in power, size and weight, according to the company. The SiT8021 consumes 90 percent lower power, is 40 percent smaller, and 70 percent lighter than quartz devices. These best in class specifications enable the longest battery life as well as the smallest size and weight of smart watches, fitness bands, Tablets, smart phones, portable audio and accessories.

“In 2013 and 2014, SiTime introduced the smallest, lowest power 32 kHz oscillator and TCXO for the wearables, IoT and mobile markets. Customers adopted these 32 kHz XOs and TCXOs rapidly – we expect to ship several tens of millions of units in 2015,” said Piyush Sevalia, Executive Vice President, Marketing, SiTime.

The SiT8021 has the following features and benefits as compared to quartz technology:

  • 100 μA of supply current, 90 percent lower
  • Ultra-small 1.5 mm x 0.8 mm package, 40 percent smaller
  • Mass of 1.28 mg, 70 percent lighter
  • Height of 0.55 mm, 45 percent thinner
  • 1 to 26 MHz output frequency with 6 decimal places of accuracy
  • Operating temperature from -40°C to +85°C
  • 1.8V operation for battery powered applications
  • 30 times higher shock & vibration resistance

SiTime Corporation claims to hold 80 percent market share and has over 270 million devices shipped.
