New OS for IoT is born

A new Operating System (OS) meant exclusively for devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) was launched recently. Called Spark, this one is Open Source and is in the Cloud.

Spark OS is designed to be infinitely scalable and manage connections between millions of users and their devices. There is no upper limit to how many products can be connected to the messaging system. Instead of paying monthly for a service for a product that OEMs only sell once, the Spark Cloud has a one-time fee associated with each product that connects.

Spark Labs, Inc, the company behind the new OS, has also developed the Spark Core, which is pitched as a “platform as a component.”  This is a small electronic circuit that can be embedded directly into hardware devices, to cost-effectively integrate wireless connectivity into them.

The Spark Core can be integrated within hours, and can be hooked to the Cloud out of the box. For manufacturers, the Spark Core reference design can be fully integrated into your product as soon as they are ready to produce mass scale.

The same firm also sells Spark Maker Kit that contains all the necessary hardware components to get IoT users started with building simple Internet-enabled projects. The kit comes in a neat project carrying case and includes:

  • Kit includes: Spark Core (chip antenna)
  • breadboard + jumper wires
  • force sensor
  • temperature sensors
  • light sensors
  • tilt sensors
  • rotary potentiometer
  • servo + motors
