Linux-led new attempt at establishing an open source IoT standard

San Francisco, Jan. 16, 2014: It is one thing to be connecting all sorts of devices to the Internet and another to have a common standard governing them. The IoTivity, an open source software framework, is one such attempt in presenting a standard to govern all Internet of Things (IoT) gadgets.

iotivitypageLaunched on December 30 last year, IoTivity is an open source software framework enabling seamless device-to-device connectivity to address the emerging needs of the Internet of Things.

IoTivity is hosted by The Linux Foundation and will soon release a reference implementation of the IoT standards defined by the Open Internet Consortium (OIC), which has more than 50 members including Intel and Samsung.

The aim of the IoTivity framework is “to provide a standard and open source implementation so devices and services will be able to work together regardless of who makes them.”

The IoTivity project was created to bring together the open source community to accelerate the development of the framework and services required to connect these billions of devices.

Already, developers and others interested in the IoT can download the 0.9.0 release for the IoTivity Resource Framework. This is “preview quality” release.

IoTivity is open to all companies working in this field.
