A new alliance around IoT is formed. It’s called the Industrial Internet Consortium

This is a sure-shot indication that the Internet of Things (IoT) is indeed becoming a huge business. Several tech competitors such as Intel and Cisco, normally arch rivals, have decided to collaborate on the IoT, and form an alliance called the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC). Included in this new band of boys are US majors AT&T, General Electric and IBM.

The Consortium is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to the IoT — a term for a connected network of sensors and devices. It aims to “break down the barriers of technology silos to support better access to big data with improved integration of the physical and digital worlds to unlock business value.”

Already, companies have started envisaging interest in this new front. On Friday, PrismTech became the first non-core Group company to sign up.

The IIC is open to any business, organisation or entity with an interest in accelerating the Industrial Internet. The group hopes to establish common ways that machines share information and move data.

The IIC will take the lead in establishing interoperability across various industrial environments for a more connected world. Specifically, the consortium’s charter will be to encourage innovation by:

  •         Utilising existing and creating new industry use cases and test beds for real-world applications
  •         Delivering best practices, reference architectures, case studies, and standards requirements to ease deployment of connected technologies
  •         Influencing the global standards development process for Internet and industrial systems
  •         Facilitating open forums to share and exchange real-world ideas, practices, lessons, and insights
  •         Building confidence around new and innovative approaches to security

Here’s a video explaining why companies and organisations should join the IIC:

Meanwhile, PrismTech has joined the Industrial Internet Consortium as its first (non-founder) industry member. Dr. Richard Soley, Executive Director of the IIC said it welcomes PrismTech as one of the first members. As a leading contributor to the OMG Data Distribution Service standard – a protocol for the Industrial Internet – IIC looked forward to leveraging PrismTech’s expertise in helping to identify the key enabling technologies for the Industrial Internet.
