ISE launches crowdfunding campaign to better secure connected devices

Baltimore, July 21, 2015: Independent Security Evaluators (ISE), the security consulting and research firm behind the hacking concept ‘IoT Village’, today announced a crowdfunding campaign to better secure connected devices.

ISE said in a press release that IoT Village, which features speakers, workshops, press events and hacking contests, would focus on a wide range of Internet-connected devices, including door locks, toys, storage systems, routers, time clock systems, surveillance systems and more.

IoTvillagedefcon“We are launching this crowdfunding campaign partly because a security initiative of this scale is very capital-intensive, but most importantly, because this is a community effort,” explained Ted Harrington, one of the lead organisers of IoT Village and the Executive Partner at ISE.

“The success of this initiative relies on what we refer to as ‘hacker backers’: individuals motivated to help this critically important mission succeed.”

“People love to be part of creating great products through crowdfunding campaigns,” states Steve Bono, one of the lead organisers of IoT Village and the founder of ISE, “and here is an opportunity for individuals to also ensure that their privacy and security are safeguarded through a similar funding mechanism.”

Additionally, the organisers also announced that the IoT Village would feature another installation of the wildly popular router hacking contest SOHOpelessly Broken, which debuted last year as the first-ever router hacking contest at DEF CON.

“SOHOpelessly Broken laid the foundation for what has become IoT Village,” said Harrington, “and given the overwhelmingly positive response to SOHOpelessly Broken in the many iterations we’ve hosted of the contest since, it was an easy decision to throw it again here at our newest concept: IoT Village.”

IoT Village is a new hacking event, to be debuted at the information security conference DEF CON, with the mission of improving  security in so-called Internet of Things devices.

IoT Village will be held between August 7 and 9, 2015 at DEF CON 23, co-located between Paris and Bally’s casinos in Las Vegas.
