World’s first IoT complexes to come up in South Korea: Report

South Korea will have what is been touted as the world’s first-ever Internet of Things (IoT) complexes, enabling professionals to, among other things, ordering snacks right from their “smart” seats. The Government haIt had allotted 12.5 billion won (about US $11.5 million) for the same.

A report in South Korea’s M K Business News today said even business processes in these two complexes will be connected to the Internet, between equipment and person and between equipment and equipment. The audience, for example, will be able to see action replay of specific scenes at a ball park on the weekend using a Wi Fi-enabled smartphone. They also can order chicken and beer from a snack bar from the very seat they are sitting on.

Such “Smart Service” was expected to be realised in some cities of Korea from the second half this year. The report quoted officials of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA).

Locations for the two complexes had been narrowed down to four – Bukchon (traditional culture) in Seoul, Centum City in Haeundae Busan, Songdo in Incheon and Health Care Complex in Daegu. The Government was expected to select two by March this year, and introduce the service in the second half of the year.

An official of the Future Planning Ministry was quoted in the report as saying the purpose of the IoT complexes was to discover profitable services by integrating public information with private technology.
