Virtualisation software co VMware joins up Industrial Internet Consortium

Bangalore, Oct. 17, 2014: The India-based virtualisation software company VMware is the latest IT outfit to have joined the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), clearly signalling the company’s interest  in the Internet of Things (IoT).

vmwarepageAnnouncing this on their official blog post, Sanjay Poonen, Executive Vice President and General Manager of VMware’s end-user computing business, said joining the IIC “demonstrates our commitment to drive innovation in the mobile-cloud era and enable customers to execute on practical IoT use cases.”

Founded in 2014, the independently run IIC was founded by industry leaders such as AT&T, Cisco, General Electric, IBM and Intel, to further development, adoption and wide-spread use of interconnected machines, intelligent analytics and people at work. The IIC actively promotes IoT standards and brings some of the most innovative industry partners together to advance enterprise IOT.

Explaining the reasons for his company deciding to go along with IIC, Mr Poonen wrote, “In our conversations with customers, we continue to hear the modern workforce seeking more information and the right solutions sets to leverage devices beyond laptops, tablets and smartphones into the exponentially growing world of connected “things.” With our existing set of capabilities, technology roadmap, partner ecosystem and membership in a leading organization like IIC, we will enable fresh possibilities for enterprise IoT, which is poised to completely transform how we do business and truly enable end users to work at the speed of life.

“The IoT opportunity is too large for one organisation to tackle and partnerships are critical. That’s why we at VMware chose to join the Industrial Internet Consortium. By working together with IIC’s deep bench of technology leaders in IoT, we will help support its tenacious goals to accelerate IoT in the workplace, educate the industry on standards and deliver best practices for enterprise IoT. “

VMware is the second IT firm to have joined IIC of late. Earlier in the month, No Magic, Inc. a global provider of integrated modeling, simulation and analysis solutions and services, too, had joined up the alliance.
