Virdata: Technicolor’s new cloud-based monitoring and management services

Technicolor, a company that is known for its research and innovative approach in the media and entertainment sector, has said it would be launching a service, Virdata, to provide businesses with cloud-based monitoring and management services for the Internet of Things (IoT) and M2M (machine-to-machine) services. Initial industries on Virdata’s data will be consumer electronics, automotive, utilities, health, industrial automation and retail.

Virdata has decided to team up with IBM for its IBM SoftLayer cloud capabilities to provide clients with elastic and scalable services. Softlayer operates a global cloud infrastructure platform built for Internet scale and currently provides Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS) to leading-edge customers ranging from Web startups to global enterprises. SoftLayer’s bare metal servers and virtual cloud infrastructure provide for the running of cloud native workloads like Virdata.

In a press release, Technicolor said Virdata’s device and application monitoring and management service features a real-time and historical big data analytics stack.

At the International CES 2014, Virdata and IBM are scheduled to demonstrate several implementations of its capabilities like geo location and real-time and historical data for a tablet; utilizing on-board diagnostics (OBD) to analyze performance data in a connected car as well as fleet management; and tracking patient data with a heartbeat monitor.

Technicolor said Virdata’s new approach to monitoring and managing IoT and M2M services is based on emerging cloud native technologies. The company is currently engaged with application partners such as Nexstep, a customer-care application leveraging IBM’s Worklight technology, and Olea Sensor Networks, which is developing disruptive wireless Heart Sensor and accompanied analytics. Additionally, Virdata embraces open source technologies such as the Cloud Foundry and OpenStack initiatives.
