UK Government funds Internet of Things consortium

London, Aug 21, 2014: A group of 40 British-based companies, the HyperCat consortium, has been awarded £1.6 million by the UK Government’s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board.

The consortium will develop and implement a publically available, universal specification for the Internet of Things (IoT) – the first step towards an open, international standard for IoT interoperability, the consortium said on its blog. Some “biggies” are part of the consortium, including ARM and KPMG.

hypercatAt present, there is no standard by which these objects, or things, can communicate with one another, and this is a feature that the consortium will lay down.

Recently at the CeBIT technology trade fair in Germany, British Prime Minister David Cameron had highlighted the £45m that the Technology Strategy Board has committed to developing IoT technology. The Technology Strategy Board’s funding of HyperCat demonstrates the Government’s commitment to a UK drive in the IoT revolution. This not-for-profit project’s focus is on collaboration rather than control.
