Dublin is the first European Internet of Things (IoT) collaborator for a leading Japanese tech company.

A report in The Evening Echo said SoftBank and Dublin City Council the initiative marks the first ‘smart city research partnership’ that SoftBank had entered into outside of Japan to develop solutions that will improve life in cities across Europe and Asia.

Jamie Cudden, Smart City Programme Manager with Dublin City Council, said Dublin was chosen for what it had to offer. SoftBank’s Vice-president of global business strategy Hidebumi Kitahara said it was the company that had approached Dublin City Council to team up on the project.

Mr Kitahara said the goal of the project was to make the lives of citizens and companies easier and more productive. He was in Dublin this week to discuss the details of the project and where it will focus its expertise.
