This annual research project looks at application management trends and best practices.

Of those surveyed, today, only about 30 percent of respondent device makers were currently developing IoT devices. But 34 percent more plan on doing so over the next two years.’ The annual research project looked at application management trends and best practices.

Based on this report, Flexera said it was clear that device manufacturers were emerging from a period of “significant challenge” – characterised by low margins, stiff competition and brittle manufacturing supply chains. Increasingly. they were found to be retooling their offerings to make them intelligent and Internet-connected, opening up new ways of creating value for their customers. They’re leveraging software, licensing and entitlement management strategies to transform their business models and monetise their innovations.

The report further said that with the introduction of embedded software and app-driven hardware into manufactured devices, and the ability, through software licensing, to monetise those device functions and features – devices hade become intelligent solutions and capable of generating completely new types of revenue streams. Connecting those intelligent devices to the Internet was accelerating the third industrial revolution by enabling services, solutions and Big Data offerings around every day industrial and consumer goods.
