Microsoft’s Azure software to be used to modernise London Tube

London, Aug 22, 2014: Information Technology (IT) giant Microsoft has joined hands with British Internet systems installation company Telent and IT consulting company CGI to modernise London’s Tube network using the Internet of Things (IoT).

The partnership was announced on the official government blog of the United Kingdom (UK). The post said the partnership will look to modernise the London Underground monitoring systems, which oversee critical rail assets with data from thousands of devices and sensors, by integrating Microsoft’s Azure Intelligent Systems Services software.

This is the second major announcement on the IoT front coming from the UK Government this week. Earlier, it had announced the award of £1.6 million to a consortium called HyperCat made up of 40 British-based companies working in this field.

Telent, CGI and Microsoft will work together to modernise the systems that monitor London Underground’s critical rail assets by harnessing data from thousands of devices and sensors. The system streamlines manual monitoring processes, securing and integrating disconnected systems, and spotting equipment issues in real-time using Microsoft Azure Intelligent Systems Services.
