Those of you interested in making products related to the Internet of Things (IoT), here’s a contest you could probably enter. Presented by Cypress Semiconductor and Arrow Electronics, the ‘PSoC Pioneer Challenge’ is calling makers to conceptualise and prototype IoT projects using the new PSoC 4 BLE Pioneer Kit.

The IoT contest has been launched on Make of Maker Media fame. The latter is a global platform for connecting makers with each other, with products and services, among other things. Through media, events and ecommerce, Maker Media serves a growing community of makers, hobbyists or professionals, who bring a DIY mindset to technology.

Applications for the PSoC Pioneer Challenge will be accepted until March 23, 2015. Projects can be simple or complex. Submissions for the IoT contest can range from a simple temperature sensor to a sophisticated home security or even a coffee pot that can tweet its own temperature. The presenters said instead of complexity, they were looking for projects that technically utilised the capabilities of the solution, and whose overall design is novel and clever.

Projects entered into the Challenge will be judged against the following criteria:

Technical utilization
Demonstration of product capabilities
Design innovation and novelty

There will be one grand prize winner in this IoT contest who shall receive US $2,500 for travel to Maker Faire Bay Area, on May 16 in San Mateo, California. One runner-up will receive a US $100 gift certificate to Maker Shed, one US $100 gift certificate to Arrow Electronics, and one US $250 gift certificate to Cypress Semiconductor.

Once the deadline is over, public voting will run from March 24 through to April 2. From the top 5, the Grand Prize winner and Runner-Up will be selected.
