Google starts AI lab in India

Seeing potential in Indian talent, Google has inaugurated an artificial intelligence (AI) lab in Bangalore, the IT capital of India.

Announcing this on ‘The Keyword’, Google’s official blog, Jay Yagnik, Vice President of Google AI said AI was moving on to the next stage of technological advances. India, with its world-class engineering talent, strong computer science programs and entrepreneurial drive, India had “the potential to lead the way in using AI to tackle big challenges.”

Google Research India – the new AI lab in Bangalore – will focus on two pillars: advancing fundamental computer science and AI research by building a strong team and partnering with the research community across the country. This will then be applied to tackle big problems in fields like healthcare, agriculture, and education, said Jay.

Google Research India will be led by Manish Gupta, a renowned computer scientist and ACM Fellow with a background in deep learning across video analysis and education, compilers and computer systems. Professor Milind Tambe will also come on as a joint appointment from Harvard University, as Director of AI for Social Good. He will build a research program around applying AI to tackle big problems in areas like healthcare, etc. 

The Bangalore lab is part of Google’s global network of researchers.
