fortiss announces new process for funding and support for European tech innovators

Munich, Nov 8, 2015: fortiss has announced a new process to provide funding and support for technology and engineering innovators around Europe.

Funded by the European Commission, CPSE Labs is a pan-European alliance of nine organisations co-ordinated by fortiss, with a shared goal of supporting European businesses breaking into new markets with innovative products and services that span ICT and engineering.

cpselabsTo support this sector, the Consortium has established a network of design centers, each with experience in advanced ICT technologies for designing cyber-physical products and services. CPSE Labs also provides funding for industrial experiments which are designed and carried out by businesses themselves. Businesses selected to participate can receive up to €150,000 towards the costs of experimental work and will be partnered with a CPSE Labs design centre to receive support and training.

“CPSE Labs aims to bring together Europe’s most innovative businesses with some of Europe’s major cyber-physical research institutes,” said Holger Pfeifer of fortiss, CPSE Labs Co-ordinator. “Innovative technology businesses are a key driver for economic growth in the European economy. We want to give them the support they need to develop their range of existing products and services, or even to break new ground with innovative ideas.”

CPSE Labs concentrates on supporting businesses working in cyber-physical systems (CPSs), systems that incorporate complex computation as well as interaction with the physical world (through sensors and actuators). CPS engineering is closely related to fields such as Internet of Things (IoT) and embedded systems.

The CPSE Labs project supports a variety of ICT technologies for CPS design, from IoT platforms to co-modelling tools for collaborative design of embedded systems. Businesses which participate in the CPSE Labs project will receive support to evaluating their chosen platform. The whole programme is designed to ensure that cutting-edge design tools and techniques coming from Europe’s research laboratories are successfully transitioned into the European marketplace.

CPSE Labs is currently accepting proposals for new industrial experiments, with technology and engineering businesses able to apply for up to €150,000. Submitted proposals will undergo independent evaluation as part of a selection process.

A first wave of experiments has already received funding from CPSE Labs, including:

  • Safe deployment of a mobile robot in an airfield runway for lighting maintenance
  • Flexible development of an industrial control system for energy load management in a biog as plant
  • De-centralised architecture for traffic management systems
  • Testing framework for CPS tool chain integration

CPSE Labs is part of the “Smart Anything Everywhere” initiative, funded by the EC under the Horizon 2020 programme.
