China’s Tencent Holdings Ltd. is set for a clash with Google Android, Apple’s iOS & Alibaba’s YunOS. It today announced the release of Operating System (OS) for smartphones & smart watches with an eye on the 557 million Chinese accessing the Web through mobile devices.The software is called TOS+. It has all the features of a mobile OS, plus some. It has voice recognition & even a payment platform. Reports coming in from Bejing said the new OS software was focused on wearables & other Internet-connected devices. Chief Operating Officer of the Shenzhen-based Tencent Mark Ren told delegates at the Global Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing today that Tencent wanted to make an open platform to connect all people, devices & services in the future.
Recently, another Chinese company & rival Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. had launched its own OS called YunOS. TOS+ will be looking at tapping Tencent’s stronghold in Online gaming through virtual reality. The COO said Tencent would work with partners to integrate the OS into devices including smart glasses. Tencent owns 2 of China’s most popular instant messaging applications — WeChat & QQ. Together, they have over 1 billion users combined.
The Tencent TOS+ is available to be licensed without cost, like Google’s Android.
