Brit co ARM to acquire Dutch IoT security software company Offspark

Cambridge, Feb.9, 2015: British company ARM has just shown it is serious about the Internet of Things (IoT) security-end of the business. It today announced its acquisition of Offspark, the IoT’s security software company. The terms of the deal, though, were not revealed.

Offspark acquiredOffspark is a Dutch company that specialises in the IoT communications security, and its PolarSSL technology is already deployed in a wide variety of devices including sensor modules, communication modules and smartphones. The new deal will help developers using the ARM mbed platform to design and build the IoT products with world-class communication security and software cryptography.

PolarSSL is the IoT industry’s most pervasive embedded Transport Layer Security (TLS) solution. It will form the core of the ARM mbed communication security and software cryptography strategy and will be rebranded as ARM mbed TLS. The technology will remain open source and will be made available to developers for commercial use, the company said in a press statement.

“We have always said that security must be the foundation of any IoT system and the acquisition of Offspark is evidence of us making that happen,” said Krisztian Flautner, General Manager, IoT business, ARM. “PolarSSL technology is already deployed by the leading IoT players. The fact that those same companies also utilize ARM Cortex processor and software technologies means we are now able to provide a complete bedrock solution for the industry to innovate from.”

According to Paul Bakker, Chief Executive Officer of Offspark, security was the most fundamental aspect in ensuring people trust the IoT technology and that was only possible with a truly tailored solution. Together, ARM and Offspark, he said, could provide security to the edge of any system.
