ARM will manufacture a trillion IoT chips by 2040: Softbank

Japanese megacorp Softbank’s semiconductor subsidiary ARM will deliver about a trillion chips designed for the Internet of Things (IoT) in the next 20 years.

Chairman and the Chief Executive Office of Softbank made this prediction at the on-going Mobile World Conference in Barcelona, Spain.

According to news agency Reuters, Softbank’s Masayoshi Son explained the rationale behind acquiring ARM. He pointed out that the number of “brain cells” in chips would surpass the number of human brain neurons in 2018, opening up a huge opportunity for smart and connected objects.

Son used the opportunity to explain his 30-year-vision of a world where the artificial computer brain will have 10,000 intelligence quotient (IQ) capabilities compared with 100 for the average human. All these were reasons why Softbank had decided to acquire ARM, he said.
