It’s no big surprise that a new Apple device launch is generating global mass hysteria. This time, it’s not an iPad or iPhone but the new Apple Watch.

Apple’s 1st foray into wearable technology is a guaranteed hit even before its official launch. But let’s put the launch event & the usual Apple publicity aside & focus on the device itself.

Specifically, does the Apple Watch measure up to the hype, & more importantly – does it live up to the high standards for form, design & function set by the late Steve Jobs?

Well, for starters, the Apple Watch looks like a real watch & keeps time like a real watch & offers a stopwatch, timer, world clock, alarm, airplane mode & other such features.

applewatch3Unlike the flood of smartwatches debuting on Kickstarter every other day, this one focuses on 3 basic & simple things.

1 is, of course, keeping time. The 3 models – Apple Watch, Watch Sport & Watch Edition, are all unique in their own way. The stainless steel Apple Watch wraps a modern smartphone operating system & hardware into a sleek but classic watch with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The Watch Sport is Apple’s mini version of a wearable smartphone. This is the 1 that all the cool school & college kids will be wearing tomorrow. The Watch Edition is the luxury version, with an 18-carat gold case in yellow or rose & exquisitely crafted straps & closures.

What sets these watches apart from your usual smartwatches is the vast range of built-in apps that Apple is giving you. You can now use the Apple Watch directly for everything from messaging to phone calls, mail, music, camera, TV remote, weather,

But the real stars of the show are the activity & fitness apps. The 3 rings of the Activity app will show your daily progress & make you get up off the couch to get some exercise. It’s also an advanced sports watch that gives you real-time stats for a variety of popular workouts. The Apple Watch is also a self-learning device that remembers your activity & fitness levels & uses that information to suggest personalized all-day activity goals.

It’s just as good as your own personal trainer, & will even reward you with a pat on the wrist when you reach personal bests or a milestone.

It even keeps track of when you stand up, & encourages you to keep moving. The heart rate sensor determines your intensity level & calorie burn, & the accelerometer on the Apple Watch teams up with the WiFi & GPS on your iPhone to accurately measure distance & speed during workouts you do outside.

It’s just possible that the Apple Watch may become so popular that it brings back the practice of wearing a watch. That’s rather ironic coming from a mobile phone company, because it was mobile phones that killed the traditional wristwatch in the first place.

Preorders start from April 10. The device costs US $349 for a base model, while a luxury gold version will start at $10,000 & a few select stores will have ones reaching to $17,000.
