Late last week, China’s Alibababa launched the Hanguang 800 chip at its Apsara Conference 2019 in Hangzhou, China.
According to media reports, the new chip is already handling tasks requiring heavy processing on the company’s e-commerce Website like product search, image analysis, personalised recommendations and automatic translations.
The Hanguang 800 is the first semiconductor product in Alibaba’s 20-year history. The new chip speeds up ML tasks on the company’s platform by a factor of 12.
Another announcement was an AI Cloud service based on Hanguang 800, that boasts 100 percent more efficient performance than traditional GPU-based services.
