All the news on artificial intelligence, cognitive computing and IoT

Cognitive computing

Often, people are confused between artificial intelligence (AI), cognitive computing and machine learning (ML). Like many scientists and analysts, we, too, subscribe to the view that the confusion will remain till one of these emerging technologies becomes the dominant ones in the next few years. But for now, let’s just call AI “a domain” of the cognitive sciences. Machine learning is one process of AI.

The different streams of cognitive sciences like neuro sciences influence AI research. AI, on the other hand, is to allow computers do intelligent things faster. IBM has defined cognitive computing as the “systems that learn at scale, reason with purpose and interact with humans naturally.”

So be it. Readers will agree that the Internet of Things (IoT) is helping connect almost any object, real, virtual and otherwise, and helping shape many an organisation, old or new.

When we had launched over four years ago, AI and cognitive computing were not yet mainstream. Today, that’s not the case. IoT and cognitive capabilities are helping companies reduce efficiency costs and improve business models. Obviously, when enterprises combine data collected through IoT and cognitive computing, and analyse it, the impact on them will be tremendous.

There is a clear intersection between the IoT and AI. It’s about “connected intelligence” and no longer only about “connected devices”.

Keeping all this in mind, we have decided to launch a new section on AI and cognitive computing from today. It will have all the news and views from these new worlds. We have always believed in adding value for our readers; this is one attempt in that direction.
