Intel and JD.com tie up on IoT retail

Chinese online retail titan JD.com has joined hands tech company Intel to explore further use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in retail.

The two have launched a joint lab that will explore the use of IoT by developing vending machines, media and advertising solutions, as well as technologies to be used in futuristic stores based on Intel’s architecture.

As part of the collaboration to date, scientists have merged Intel’s RRI edge computing and OpenVINO computer vision architecture with JD’s computer vision algorithms. The result of this existing work allows users of the technology to analyse customer traffic and in-store purchasing habits, which can help store owners provide a more personalised experience to their customers.
